WHO IS GOD ANYWAY?
The truth is - we really don't know Who or What God is. We are finite beings trying to define the Infinite. Human words and concepts can't even come close to unraveling the mystery and essence of God.
Of course, this doesn't mean we don't try. We attach a variety of human attributes to God, and in our search to arrive at some understanding of Who He is, we make Him the best of everything: He is All Good, All Knowing, All Love, etc. We even make Him a Father, the best Daddy anyone could ever have - kind, patient, understanding and forgiving. Only problem with attaching all that humanness to Him is what happens when we displease Him? We then talk about the wrath of God; he is the great avenger and punisher. We were even taught that the Fear of the Lord is a virtue to be practiced.
Of course, we come from a humanistic concept of God, what else can we do. In our humanness, we look for the tangibles. We want to see God, touch Him, speak with Him. We want Him to be tangible so that we can prove that He really exists. We want to remove all doubt. Enough of taking things on faith just because our religion tells us that God exists. We hear that He is showing Himself to us all the time in nature, in the universe, in new babies. That's nice, but all of that is His creation, those are His manifestations. Where is He? Hiding? Maybe in our hearts, our souls, our spirit?
Well if God is a pure spirit, then He doesn't experience anger or wrath; only we humans do. He really doesn't have to get even, because we can't hurt a pure spirit anyway. Do you really think or believe that we can push God into a corner, back Him up against a wall so that He has no other choice but to come out swinging? If He is "all everything" like we think, then just maybe He's smart enough not to let us get the better of Him.
Here's another problem, maybe God is not really a He but is a She. Some people can't decide so they make Him an It. And nobody knows, but maybe God is a combination of all three? Most of us are familiar with the story of Moses and the burning bush (this is how God presented Himself; He didn't show His real self). God told Moses to lead His people out of Egypt and Moses asked God "Whom shall I say sent me? Now listen to this, God has to come up with a name for Himself and the best He can do is the name Yahweh, which means "I am Who I am." If you reduce the name to its lowest common denominator you come up with God is "I Am". Take it further and God is simply "Am". Reduce Am to "Is" and God is calling Himself " Isness" or simply "Being". And He's not attaching any attributes to Himself either. We may be getting closer to the reality of who God is because we call Him a Supreme Being. Of course, the word "Supreme” attached to Being is for our benefit so we can have some idea of how big and great we think God is. If you have to get philosophical about it, God doesn't have anything and He's not everything: He simply is! Then just the word Being includes and becomes All.
My religious training and background has taught me that I am made in the image and likeness of God, at least my spirit or soul is. Did you ever ask yourself why would God do that? Does He need an image or a likeness of Himself? Does He need a mirror to look into and see what He really looks like? Kind of a silly question, isn’t it? But maybe an interesting one. After God created the world, He looked at what He had done and saw that it was good. Humanly speaking, He saw a piece of Himself, i.e., a piece of His creation and knew that He did a fine piece of work. So here again we make God a creator and we have Him bring things out of nothing. The question is asked, If God is all contained within Himself, no beginning and no end, how does He know Himself. Who does He think (if He thinks, because that's a human concept) He is?
We started out this writing by saying that we don’ t know who God is. We reasoned (again human thinking) that He must be some kind of Being. The other thing that seems safe to say is that God is Infinite. The word doesn't have any qualifiers on it or in it. God just keeps going on and on and His Infinity somehow demands that He creates anew - new people, new stars, new galaxies and universes - and He never runs out of ideas. No two people are exactly alike, no two snowflakes are the same, no two leaves are alike. If He ran out of ideas, He would use up all of His Infinity and that just does not fit the definition of the word "Infinite". Besides that, if He used up all of His infinity, He would cease to exist for the simple reason that He would no longer be infinite.
Somewhere I heard that we also are co-creators with God. Now where did that concept come from? Well here’ s a story from human imagination that is interesting and may be plausible. When God created my spirit, I was happy existing in His presence, but I said to Him one afternoon in eternity, "I'd like to create just like You. If I incarnate on earth, I could co-create with You. Maybe build You a bridge, write a book, even have a baby or sire one . Just give me a couple of talents and let me show You what I can do. To my surprise, God said, "Go for it!". So I paged through all the Akashic records, looking for the proper time, place, century, country and parents to be born into, that would offer me the best opportunity to show God what I could do. I chose this time in history to be here. Of course, once I was born, I became a little scared, like what did I do? I just left a safe place called Heaven for an uncertain feeling here on earth. What if I can't get back? My panic turned to calmness when I remembered who I was and the purpose for my incarnation. I wanted to reflect back to God an image of Himself, I wanted God to see Himself in the image of my spirit and know that His creation was good.
And so my path and journey here on earth has had many twists and turns and even when I got off track, eventually I found myself heading in the right direction back to Home. It took many years for the truth to dawn on me and it finally became clear that God was not about to lose any of His creation, not even me. It would be like losing a piece of His infinity and that just can't happen. So I'm still co-creating with you, God. I know, God, that you smile at my childlike drawings, but I am still your child and I'm working, stumbling, my way back to You and when I get there my declaration to You will simply be “ I'm back” and maybe, just maybe, I might say "Hey, can I do that again?"
